Happy Valentine's Day

I don't particularly care for this holiday of love. I've never had a proper Valentine and this year is no exception. Still, I'm dressed in red and pink. I've had comfort food for lunch including chocolate truffles. I've sent out Valentine's Day cards and got a few back. I put out more birdseed for the squirrels and birds, leaving some on the ground for those that have to wait for leftovers spilled from the feeder. I made a small donation to Big Dogs, Big Hearts for some sweeties needing extra medical care. I guess that's what Valentine's Day is all about-giving a little to make others happy. Happy Valentine's Day!

Opera!

I'm preparing for my group-tonight we will have our first session about opera! Hopefully, I can find a DVD player as I wish to show the Gilligan's Island episode-The Producer. In it they put on Hamlet-the musical, 2 of the songs happen to be from Bizet's opera Carmen. Then I will show those two songs as they really appear in Carmen. I'm looking forward to it-and hope the patients enjoy it as well.

This is it. The end of my vacation. WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! In my line of work you really need at least 2 weeks off-the first just to decompress, the second to actually get stuff done. I'm halfway decompressed, but a bit put off with myself that I didn't get more done. So, what did I do on my vacation? I made and mailed my Valentine's Day cards, except for Vinnie's (his is a little special and I haven't posted it yet) and my international ones may not make it in time. I went to a chocolate tasting at Hedonist Artisan Chocolates, a wine tasting at Wine Sense, learned to make chocolate truffles at the New York Wine and Culinary Center, went to a book signing with author Lorraine Bartlett, spent a day with my folks making cookies with my mom, took Sam and spent another day there going through old stuff, stopped at a few favorite stores...but very few, got caught up on my TV shows...those that are available On Demand at any rate (darn you Vampire Diaries), read a lot, discovered and became addicted to Pinterest, and went out to lunch with a friend. Hmmm, that actually sounds like I did a lot...whatever the case, I enjoyed myself, but, I'm ready for another vacation!

Harrison

Sadly, my sweet Harrison crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. He had been fine, until a few days ago when I think he had a stroke. He had some hind end paralysis and went quickly downhill after that. Harrison was always a sweet laid back boy who loved giving kisses. He's with his brothers, Aquinas and Dylan, now. His nephews, Tyskie and Zywiec, and well as his friends Grodziskie and Okocim will miss him. I will especially miss this gentle soul.

I don't read reviews. Well, that's not quite true, I don't follow reviews. I've loved many things-movies, books, and more-that have received poor reviews. Bad reviews of things I like tend to piss me off as well. But, like a train wreck, I sometimes have to read. I've been posting some books to my Pinterest board First in the Series. These are the books that started a series I really enjoy. To pin them I go to the Amazon.com page in order to get the picture. There I see the list of reviews...and I see some 1 star reviews...for books I love. Yes, I've been reading some. I know I shouldn't, as they're putting me in a bad mood. Even though I never believe reviews, it pains me to read some of these...and I get mad at the idiots that write some of them-yes some people are idiots and not just because I don't agree with them (although that can be a good indication of idiocy...still). One jerk had the temerity to write, "At any rate, when I start thinking that maybe Agatha Christie was a literary genius, I know I'm reading a very bad mystery novel." Sorry, idiot...Agatha Christie WAS a literary genius! I'm now trying to take deep cleansing breaths...and vowing to write positive reviews for books I enjoy.

I have a new addiction-Pinterest. So what is it? It's a virtual pinboard that lets you save and organize things you find on the web. You can also see other people's interests and repin their ideas onto your own boards. According to the site itself, "Our goal is to connect everyone in the world through the 'things' they find interesting. We think that a favorite book, toy, or recipe can reveal a common link between two people. With millions of new pins added every week, Pinterest is connecting people all over the world based on shared tastes and interests." Pretty cool. I've discovered new recipes and posted things of my own. I get a kick when people discover my things and pin them to their own boards. At the moment I have 15 boards (topics, if you will) and 7 followers (subscribers, you might call them). A good portion of the fun is checking other people's pins and following them to other people and so on-you never know what you'll find and that's part of the adventure. At the moment you need an invitation to join...but if you can get one, grab it and check out this great site!

Happy Groundhog Day...and Candlemas...and Imbolc!

Today is a big holiday in that there are 3 holidays celebrated today...along with a friend's birthday. The three more popular reasons to celebrate (sorry Trey, hmmm, Trey...see a theme here?) all have to do with the coming spring. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning so that means 6 more weeks of winter. Since we really haven't seen much of a winter yet, I guess that's OK. As the Yankee Candle Company reminded us, today is the midpoint of winter and the day that churches bless all the candles for the year. There's also a saying-"If Candlemas Day be fair and bright, Winter will have another fight. If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain, Winter won't come again". As for Imbolc, author Laurell K. Hamilton sums it up this way, "Imbolc is the promise of life’s return, not exactly spring, but a measure of hope that spring, and summer, will come, and winter does not last forever." She has a great post about the holiday. So celebrate today. I'll be celebrating-I need to get through this evening at work, then I start vacation!

The End of the Month

It's hard to believe the end of the month is here. I'm glad I decided to take vacation at the beginning of February-I need a break. Hopefully my cold will be gone and I'll start feeling better. I have a few plans, but basically I'm just glad to be off work. I need to make it through 3 more days. Give me strength!

Frustrating

It's been a frustrating morning. Sam has been whining, I can't find my pedometer-which should be on my nightstand where I thought I put it last night. I've used it for 880 days in a row-today I'll miss it. I went upstairs for a moment and returned to find Sam had eaten the rest of my salad. I'm still sick, but feeling better. I'll go in to work this afternoon and pray for a quick, good shift. I need to get through this week, then I have a week of vacation!

It was 35 years ago today that it hit; the Blizzard of '77. I was just a kid, so to me it was a great adventure, nothing scary. My main memory is getting to my grandparents house. Normally it was a 5 minute drive-not so this time. My parents and I set off, driving, but we couldn't cross the border between Kenmore and Buffalo. We left the car and set off on foot. When we got to their street we couldn't believe what we saw. In the middle of the road was a mountain of snow, higher than the 2 story houses. I'll never forget that sight! Apparently, the blizzard only brought 6-12 inches of snow with it; it was the 38 inches already there that caused the problem, along with the 30-40 mile an hour winds which buried cars and houses and stranded hundreds...if not thousands. Here are some pictures compiled from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District publication entitled "Operation Snow Go - Blizzard of '77". Here's another site with some great photos. Sore Throat

The day is getting away from me, but I'm just so pleased I'm not at work. Unfortunately, my migraine has returned and meds aren't kicking in. I also have a feeling I'm coming down with a cold. A sore throat woke me up during the night-and kept me up for a bit. Once I woke it pretty much went away-but it's still lingering a bit. I just want to enjoy this 3 day weekend, make it through next week at work, then a week of vacation! I'd better be healthy then!

Peanut Butters

Before I go to work, or leave for Buffalo, I give Sam a peanut butter filled marrow bone. Sometimes warm, usually frozen. He enjoys it and it keeps him busy. With his "peanut butters" he couldn't care less that I'm leaving. He's whining now...I think he knows it's close to time for him to get his treat.

When I got home from work last night I discovered that Wallace had crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Wallace was the last of the Cheektowaga Boys, surrendered to a rescue after an "animal husbandry project". Wallace was the most timid of the bunch, but over time he blossomed into a loving boy-always looking for a cuddle. Those boys were never healthy, but Wallace seemed to be doing the best-looking great until recently. His death was sudden though, and unexpected. I'm grateful for the time we had together. I'll miss you Wallace, but now you can play with your brothers again.

Siberian Husky Mixes

Although neither my Brioche (who has crossed the Rainbow Bridge), nor my Sam look like a traditional Siberian Husky-I was told when I adopted each that they were Siberian Husky mixes. Brioche was supposedly Siberian Husky/White Shepherd and Sam a Siberian Husky mix (personally I think he has some Setter in him as well-but that's a guess). I adopted Brioche in Texas, but eventually we moved to New York state and she got to experience winter...and snow. At that point I became convinced that Brioche was indeed part Siberian Husky. She loved the snow and would just stand in it and stare, enjoying the cold. Sam is exactly the same way. Just before bed I let him out for his last business of the night, he does it, but then doesn't want to come in. He stands, in a drift, and stares; while I'm bundled up in the single degree temps!

Learning

I love to learn. I've always said that if I was independently wealthy I'd just keep going to school. I have so many varied interests as well. Time, however, is a bit of an enemy. It seems all I do is sleep, work, take care of the kids, and run errands. I haven't crafted in a while-although I have a few projects I need to start. However, I've decided to take 2 classes. In February I'll be going to the New York Wine & Culinary Center to take a one day class to learn how to make chocolate truffles! I've also applied to take part in an online writing course: Kiss Me or Kill Me: Writing Cozy Mysteries 101 for Romance Writers. Linda O. Johnston, a favorite author, is teaching the course through the Orange County Chapter of the Romance Writers of America. I admit...I'm not a romance writer, but I read them, and I'm looking forward to learning.

I've been laughing a bit as I hear of snow covering my friends in Oklahoma and Texas, when all I have here in WNY is rain and balmy temperatures in the 40's. That's about to change, however. Friday is supposed to still be warm...but snow coming and Saturday the high will only be in the teens. We even have a winter weather advisory starting tomorrow. Nothing major, just things getting back to normal for this time of year!

Since yesterday was Epiphany the Christmas Season is officially over. Since I'm off work tonight, I'll keep the outside lights on tonight so that I can enjoy them, but this will be the last night. I'll remove the outdoor extras tomorrow, and get to the lights soon. The weather is perfect for removing them-it's too warm for January. As for the indoor stuff...not sure. The tree may stay another week. We'll see. In Poland the Christmas Season lasts all the way until Candlemas-so I have til February 2nd!

Dentist

I went to the dentist this morning for my 6 month cleaning. No cavities...but plenty of gum inflammation. I admit, I don't floss as regularly as I should. It was also recommended that I use an electric toothbrush. My mouth is quite tight and it's difficult to clean everything-the electric is supposed to clean much better than a manual brush ever could. We also talked about my lost tooth. They're recommending a bridge. I don't mind not having the tooth-you can't see it anyway, but the ones next to it are slowly starting to shift and the one under it is getting higher-trying to fill the gap. In time this could become problematic. My insurance apparently will cover the whole thing-so I suppose I should have it done while I still have it! I haven't made the appointment yet...but I guess I should just resign myself to getting it done. Ugh.

Drained

I feel drained. I may be coming down with something-but I'm fighting it off. I don't feel too bad, just tired and drained...and periodically a little dizzy and nauseous. I woke up with a sore throat yesterday-but that quickly went away. I got to bed earlier than usual last night. I'll have to do so the next 2 nights as I have to get up early Thursday for a dentist appointment and Friday to drive an hour and a half away for a mandated state doctor's appointment. Ugh.

I never did any holiday baking, although I may do some winter baking. Fortunately, I was the recipient of homemade cookies from my mom and a friend. I did see some wonderful cookie recipes I'd love to try. I subscribed to a few holiday cookies of the day e-mails and I was even involved in a Christmas Cookie Contest at Mystery Lovers' Kitchen. I submitted 2 of my grandmother's recipes and one was chosen as a finalist-Raspberry Rollups. The results-a tie! Raspberry Rollups tied Spicy Gingerbread Cookies. We're now in a runoff. My recipe is a bit behind, but it's close with 2 days left to vote. Did you do any holiday baking? Did you try some new recipes, stick with the old reliables, or a little of both?

Wacky Weather

We had a green Christmas this year and the temperature on New Year's Eve was in the mid 40's. Very strange for this time of year in WNY. New Year's day started pretty warm as well as Sam and I went on our walk, but by the time I got to work the wind started picking up and the temperature started to drop. It also started to rain. Halfway though the evening the winds got wild (we had a wind advisory) and it got colder. As I left work it was windy and drizzly. I co-worker coming in for the next shift warned me to drive carefully and "keep both hands on the steering wheel". It didn't see that bad as I walked to my car...but then I started to drive. The drizzle turned into snain-that wet stuff that looks like snow, but doesn't accumulate and acts more like rain. The snaining continued and the winds picked up. At a stop light I saw sheets of snain! I got on the highway and the snain soon turned to snow-and the winds buffeted my car. Both hands on the wheel. At least the roads were clear...until I started to get close to home. The roads were becoming snow covered and the snow was coming at me...until I was about 5 minutes from home. The snow stopped and all was clear, windy, but clear. This morning it's about 32. There's a small amount of snow-but roads and sidewalks are clear. However, we're under a lake effect snow warning. It's going to start snowing this evening and through tomorrow. Tomorrow the high is only supposed to be 14. It'll be a short walk tomorrow Sam!

Happy New Year! I usually spend time on New Year's Eve reviewing the past year. I didn't do that this year, at least not in depth. Instead I'd like to take time today to focus on the upcoming new year. I'm not making any resolutions-but there are a few things I'd like to try to do. Write more. Since being forced onto evening shift, I haven't written much of anything. I'd like to write more-including more work on my book! Get the house in order-and try to keep it that way. Find more joy in work...even if that means finding a new job...if that's even possible. Here's hoping 2012 brings much joy and happiness. Happy New year!

A Week

A week from today is Christmas Day. I can't believe it. Am I prepared? Pretty much. All of the presents that needed to be shipped have been-although some aren't expected at their destination until the 23rd. The Christmas cards have all been mailed...well, all but one, which needs a letter. I'll write that today and mail it on the way home from work so it'll go out first thing Monday. The tree is up and decorated-although I didn't put many decorations on this year. The manger is also up and filled. So what else needs to be done? The Christmas boxes need to be put back in the attic, I have to finish a gift I'm crafting for a local friend, I need to wrap presents for my folks, local friend, and aunt and uncle, and clean the house. Plus keep up with the daily things. No holiday baking this year. I hope to do some, but it'll be winter baking. Good thing we have long winters, 'cause who knows when I'll get around to it?! Also everything must be completed by Friday, December 23 as, weather willing, I'll be celebrating Christmas Eve with my parents for the first time in 21 years! How about you? I hate my job! They change the rules to suit their whims. There's no communication and it's the most punitive excuse for a facility I've ever witnessed. Can you tell I'm pissed? I should have gotten today off-but, even though we've run with 9 for the past few days and nothing has changed, suddenly we have to work with 10. I knew there was only a slight chance I'd get the day-but to lose it not because someone called in or the acuity was raised, but just because they decided to raise the staffing minimums?!?! Yea, I'm pissed.

I was excited, then furious, then mad, then pleased. It all started Black Friday. Amazon.com was having cyber lightning deals-you were able to get great bargains as long as you got them in your cart and checked out in time. They were nice enough to post what was on sale when-so I woke up Friday and got online to get the second season of The Vampire Diaries for only $9.99. I was also getting the final Redwall book to add to my total to get free shipping, but I needed another item. Then I saw the lightening deal for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Whoo hoo. I needed it, the price was great, and the timing would be close to get Vampire Diaries too-but it was doable. Got all the items in my cart and went to check out. Tried to combine to get free shipping...it wouldn't let me. I get a warning that time is running out on my deal. The site won't let me check out. "We're sorry" the new screen read. Sorry?!?!? I lost the deal, I lost both deals. I was furious. I looked at the forums and discovered that many people were having the same problem. All of us losing deals. I was praying the matter would be resolved by the time the True Blood deal was out (Season 2 for $9.99!) I was lucky-not only was I able to get True Blood-they resold the Vampire Diaries-so I was able to get that...but no Harry Potter. Plus I had to buy more to get the free shipping-the Potter price would have been a perfect sale. I was able to calm a bit, I was able to buy the 2 items I really wanted at fantastic prices...but I was still mad. Then I came home after work Sunday night and found an e-mail from Amazon. They heard I had difficulty on the site and lost my lightning deal of Harry Potter-if I wanted I could buy it now at the lightning price. I did. Now that's great customer service.

Christmastime

Christmastime is here. Thanksgiving is over, although since I just celebrated it yesterday I'm still enjoying leftovers. The car radio has been tuned to Christmas music. The outside lights go on at dusk and stay til dawn. Christmas cards have been selected, presents mostly bought. It's not quite December, but I feel the pressure already. I need to gather the presents that need to be mailed out (most of them), wrap them and prepare for shipping. Space needs to be made for the Christmas tree. The house needs to be cleaned and decorated. So much to do...but I have to go to work now.

I am thankful for so many things. I'm thankful that although my Dad remains in rehab, he's making great progress and will, hopefully, be home for Christmas. I'm thankful that my mom remains strong and retains a sense of humour even having to deal with all the stress. I'm thankful for all of my animals: Sam, Seneca, Aleister, Calumet, Wallace, Harrison, Tyskie, Zywiec, Okocim, Grodziskie, and Harley. I'm thankful that Sam recovered through his surgery and is adjusting to only having 1 eye. I'm also thankful that he's dealing with his other health issues with a happy disposition. I'm thankful for my house. I'm thankful for my friends. I'm thankful that even though I hate my job, it allows me to to provide for myself and my family in a comfortable manner. I'm thankful that I'm me! Happy Thanksgiving!

I love deals and getting great shopping bargains. Last week I made a great deal. I bought a $20 Groupon for The Body Shop. Gotta love Groupon (and Living Social and Get My Perks)! So for $20 I could get $40 worth of stuff. Great deal already, right? But there's more. I went and bought a special bag for $5 (unfortunately all the cute Joy bags were already sold out-sigh). The special part of this bag was that everything that fit inside was an extra 30% off...and, since I'm a member there I got to add an additional 20% off. And there's more. Every week for 6 weeks I can go in and with no purchase necessary get a free gift. The first gift was a body butter duo worth $18! Yes, I love getting deals!

Intuitive

Dogs are very intuitive. Even if something has never happened to them, they know it's coming...and run! Sam had to go back to the vet this morning. Skin issues he's had since I've gotten him haven't gone away. I won't go into the fancy names, but he's got a couple things going on. For the lumps on his feet-the doc injected them with steroids. Ouch! For the itchy back-a shampoo. I need to give Sam a bath with medicated shampoo twice a week for 2 weeks, then we go back to the vet. After the vet Sam accompanied me as I stopped at the feed store. I needed to get rat food as well as bag balm for Sam's nose. Sam got some treats from the owners and I took him home before running more errands. When I got back-it was time for Bath #1. I prepared the bathroom then encouraged Sam to come upstairs...which he did. He then saw me in the doorway of the bathroom, turned around and ran back downstairs. Keep in mind-I have never given Sam a bath in this house! I tried to get Sam back upstairs...no deal. I tried again, and he came up. I got him in the bathroom. Then I had to get him in the tub. These are the times I half wish I had a smaller dog as I tried to get 79 pounds of not quite willing dog into the tub. At my first attempt he went limp and lay down in the cat's water bowl. But then I got him in. Collar taken off and warm water started. According to the directions I had to put enough shampoo to get a good lather, then rinse and repeat. Here's the fun part, at the second application you had to let it stay on him 5-10 minutes before rinsing. Fortunately, Sam was a good boy and just stood there. He couldn't get out of the tub on his own anyway...I don't think. Anyway, I rinsed him off and helped him out. Of course, we were both fairly wet! Well, 1 bath down, 3 to go!

Thanks God It's Thursday! You seem for me Thursday is Friday as it's the last day of my work week. (Sunday is my Monday.) Work has been stressful and I'm so glad that after today I'll be gone for 2 days. There's lots to do during those 2 days. I still can't believe that a week from today is Thanksgiving! I have the usual errands to run, plus a visit to the vet and then I want to clean and start getting the house ready for Christmas.

Art Expo

Last evening I went to the Animal Art Expo at the Seneca Park Zoo. This event is my favorite local event. The zoo keeps entry prices down, I'm sure so people will spend more money on art and raffle tickets! This event is for those 21 years of age and older and they have appetizers and a bar. The food is free with admission (only $3 in advance for Zoo members, $5 for everyone else) and there's a cash bar. The art work is actually created by the animals at the zoo! Some of the more prolific artists are Anna, the cougar, Aurora, the polar bear, and Admiral, the river otter. But pieces are done by many more critters as well. Some pieces are available to purchase immediately, then there is a silent auction, and many pieces are part of a raffle. They also had 2 spotlight auctions. These tickets are much more expensive, but the prizes are extra special. One was a painting by the 2 rhinos AND a meet and great with the artists themselves. The second was the one I tried to win (and lost). The prize was a yet unpainted picture by Aurora. The winner would be able to choose the colors Aurora would paint with and actually be there when she painted it! Not only that-she donated her chewed rubber toy! Talk about a conversation piece! I chose not to buy a piece right out, and I didn't win any of the raffle pieces. I got outbid in most of my silent auction pieces...but I refused to go home empty handed. I stayed by my final silent auction piece and won it! A small painting by Buffy, Xander, and Willow-the racoons!

I've gotten so behind in so many things-then I realized that Thanksgiving is less than 2 weeks away! How is this possible?!? I finally got my offerings for a paper ornament exchange mailed out, now I have to come up with a concept and create my Thanksgiving cards. I better get inspired quickly-my international cards need to go out by Wednesday at the latest. Considering it's Saturday evening already...YIKES! I also need to get cracking on the Christmas presents I'm making. I got almost all of the outdoor Christmas lights up-Thank you Mother Nature for giving me beautiful days to do it! Now the inside of the house...YIKES! I need more time.

Marlin, one of my Cheektowaga rescues, died on Thursday. He hadn't been looking well and finally succumbed to respiratory illness. The night before he crossed The Rainbow Bridge he happily took a yogie from me. His remaining brother, Wallace, misses him terribly. We will all miss this good rat.

It was a cold walk with Sam this morning. I got home and the computer said 39 degrees. There was a stiff wind, though, which made it seem even colder. There's a freeze warning tonight-so make sure those plants are protected and any pets are snug inside the house. Although there's a light rain here-at my mom's house-an hour to the west-she sees snowflakes! Winter's coming!

I truly relish my days off. There's always so much to do and the time just flies. I had to wake up early as Aleister had an early vet appointment. He's still dealing with his ears problems. Doc put more of the medicine in his ears and we go back on the first. After returning home, Sam and I went on a long walk. I checked my e-mails and then headed to Greece. A rescue organization was there today and they had some special toys I was to pick up. I got there-greeted by a sweet kissy girl (a lab mix, although she was quite small). However, they did not have my toys. One of the volunteers made a phone call-the woman wasn't sure I was coming, so she didn't send them. HELLO?!?!? I said I was coming. I made a comment on the post saying the rescue would be at that store today. I was...and am pissed. I wasted valuable time for no reason. Even if they weren't sure I was coming-why on earth not send the stuff anyway? Or why not e-mail me and verify. Now I have to waste time in 2 weeks to try again. After fuming away I grabbed a bite to eat, then picked up supplies at Walmart. A stop at the library, then I came home. The plan was to mow the lawn and put down the grub control-even before I went inside. That way I'd let Sam sleep-he doesn't like it when he's inside and I'm mowing the lawn. I mowed the part of the lawn near the neighbor, then started on the front. There were sticks down at the far edge of my property-so I stopped the lawn tractor and picked up sticks. I got back on the mower...and nothing. It wouldn't start. At the furthest most part of my property. I tried all kinds of things...nothing. It wasn't even trying to turn over. So....I pushed it all the way back to the garage. Ugh. I didn't want to delay on putting down the grub control-so I did that even without mowing. That used some muscles! Back inside I called Mom, finished my book (I highly recommend A Cast-Off Coven) then took a much needed nap. When I awoke I cleaned the Critter Nation. I hate that cage. I was sitting on the floor, cleaning the lower portion when I felt Harrison go in my robe pocket. I turned to see him backing out of my pocket carrying a tootsie roll! The little smartie found a treat. He was trying to open it, when I took it away. Never fear-I'm not that mean a momma-I opened it for him and gave him a portion of it. Harrison got his prize...well part of it! I still have lots to do, but I'm ready to quit and relax-we'll see what else I get accomplished today.

Autumn

Autumn is here bringing cooler temperatures and high winds. I haven't decorated yet-and Halloween is almost here, I did pick up a little pumpkin and some gourds-but that's it for now. I'm behind-yet the stores are ahead. I'm used to seeing Christmas decorations early at some stores...but I was still taken aback when I went to the grocery store and saw Christmas cards and decorations out! Really? Already? At the grocery store?

Blog Action Day - Food

Today is Blog Action Day, a day when bloggers worldwide post about a certain subject. This year's theme is food. Although I haven't been blogging as regularly as I should-I knew I needed to post today!

There have been so many recalled food items lately-from pre-made salads, spinach, beef, and more. Is food no longer safe to eat? Many people are starting more and more to grow their own. The veggie garden is coming back in style. I've always grown a few herbs and have several fruit trees/vines/bushes. Now I'm considering expanding, even though I'm not adept at "putting my crops up" yet. But there's a lot of food I can't, and don't want, to grow/raise. An old, but seemingly new, concept is becoming quite popular-becoming a locavore. What is a locavore? A locavore is a person who eats locally whenever possible; food grown or raised generally within a 100 mile radius from where you live. In Western NY it's pretty easy. We even have local maple syrup, fantastic wines-even beers and distilled spirits! Of course, there are certain foods that can't be grown in this region...and I just bought some imported beer...all the way from Poland. I guess that's a little more than 100 miles away. Still, although I may not be a true locavore-I do try to eat locavorically quite often. So check out those farmer's markets, look up local wineries and breweries, chances are you have good food options close by-don't depend on food that had to travel for days to get to you.

Aleister's Ears

My cat, Aleister, has had ears problems for several years. At first it was thought they were polyps. Then it was thought they weren't...but the vet had no clue what they were. We finally decided to have a biopsy done and try to figure it out. As my vet was removing the growths in Aleister's ears they used a black goo and doc feared it was cancer. Fortunately he didn't share his fear (at that point) and he was wrong. He basically cauterized as many of the growths as he could..and removed 2 of Aleister's teeth. Poor Aleister. I had to give him pills twice a day for a week. Although he wouldn't sleep with me, he only hid a few times and I was able to give him all his medication. The pathology report came back-something doc, nor his associate, had ever heard of with no known cause. We went back to the vet to see how he was healing and doc put a silver cream in his ears-to aid the healing. Aleister finally decided to start sleeping with me again. We returned again-more cream. We returned again, Doc was pleased with the healing, and decided it was time to start treating the ear infection. Doc looked at me. "Aleister is a cat." Yes. "With ear infections you have to put drops in the ears twice a day. After 3 days cats decide to hide where they can not be found." So instead of giving me drops, he packed Aleister's ears with a time release compound which lasts for 10 days. We go back then for another recheck. Poor Aleister has never had to travel so much. Thank heaven's the vet is close by!

October is here-and so is fall weather. I had to turn the furnace on. I didn't want to, but it was 57 in the house! It was a gray, rainy day yesterday, but today is gorgeous-with the sun shining. It's a bit warmer to at 62 degrees. I think more rain is coming today-but I'll take it. I just wish I could stay home and enjoy snuggling up with the kids!

Sorry, I've been MIA. Things are a bit hectic and I just have neglected to post. Aleister had a biopsy, which was more like surgery. He's recovering-but hiding. I hope to find him to give him his antibiotic! Dad was doing well, then had back spasms and had to go to the ER. He was home and in pain-but today he went back to the hospital with more problems. A Beautiful Early Fall Day

Today was a beautiful early fall day. I got up extra early as I wanted to be in Naples just after 10am for the Grape Festival. Sam and I had a quick early walk, then I gassed up the car, withdrew some cash from the ATM, and was on my way. The morning was overcast and cool-about 59 degrees, but as I headed south the skies cleared and it made for a very scenic drive. I parked in the official parking lot-what was once Widmer Winery. I noticed the new owners put their name on the building on the hill-the winery now belongs to Hazlitt. I did a lot of walking, scored some great purchases-some for gifts and some for me! I even got a kiss from a gorgeous blonde! OK, I paid for it...OK she was a Golden Retriever raising money for GRROWLS (Golden Retriever Rescue Operated With Love Statewide). I got my requisite grape pie (from Mo-Jo's). I had salt potatoes and homemade birch beer. I also made stops at The Violet Barn and Arbor Hill and a nursery in Bristol where I got some new mums. All in all a wonderful day!

I can't believe it's been so long since last I posted. I got mandated at work, the next day I tried to sleep. Time has gotten away from me! You should see my list of things to do. Sigh. Today I took Aleister to the vet for his annual checkup. We're not sure what's going on with his ears. What we thought were polyps-we don't think are. I'll take Aleister back on Tuesday. Doc will put him under and do a biopsy. I worry whenever anesthesia is involved-but this can't be comfortable for Aleister. Hopefully all will be well.

Arrival of Autumn

Autumn has officially arrived. Not according to the calendar (the autumnal equinox is still a few days away), but according to Aleister. Aleister has begun cuddling up with me to sleep once again. He won't sleep on my bed when the weather is warm, but once the chill arrives-he stakes out his side of the bed and sleeps in! For the past 2 nights all the cats were on the bed. Calumet always sleeps on the human pillow next to me, Aleister cuddled up of the other side, and Seneca at the foot of the bed. Yup, fall is here.

Labor Day

It's Labor Day, a day to celebrate unions and fair working conditions as well as the end of summer. It was very hot the past few days, but a lovely cold front came in last night. It's now in the upper 60s...but it looks like it could rain at any time. It poured last night. I have to go to work-so for all those that get 3 day weekends-Enjoy! If I stay in my current job I can retire in 15 years. I earn a good salary and have good benefits. However, I don't think I can last 15 years. Administration is running the place to the ground and working there is miserable. It's a witch hunt. When you think of it-retiring in 15 years sounds great-and not a long time. But when I think I've already put in 10 years-I'd have to do that and half again. The way the economy is going it's scary, but I think I have to polish my resume, find an interview outfit, and start looking.

I got home around midnight and let Sam in the yard to do his business. He was around the corner of the house, so I went to make sure he wasn't getting into trouble. I saw him digging near the basement window, but it wasn't his big digging. I went to get a closer look and I saw something jumping around as he snuffled the ground. What?? I pulled Sam back and saw baby bunnies! Sam had discovered a baby bunny nest. There seem to be 3 babies, their eyes are still closed, but they have fur. I covered them back up and pulled Sam inside. This morning I let Sam out and after a quick pee he was right at those babies! I kept dragged him away again. When I let him out for his walk-instead of waiting impatiently for his leash-he went right to those babies. I got him leashed and off we went. I don't know where the parents are-but I hope those babies move soon. They picked a great spot for the nest-right next to the house, right under the dryer vent...but they didn't take into consideration the resident dog!

Stupidity of the State

I just heard that the government is going to start furloughing state workers. CSEA union members at the hospital are starting first and I believe PEF members will also have to do this. At this point in time my union, NYSCOPBA, has not agreed. What this means is that these workers have 9 days where they don't get paid, they don't come to work either. This is supposed to save the state money. The reality is that there is a certain number of direct care staff needed to work the units each day and we are short staffed anyway. So the state, in its infinite wisdom will force workers to stay home, unpaid, but have to pay overtime to others to cover the units. Is it any wonder the state is in a financial bind? Idiots!

Coconut

I don't care for coconut. I don't care for the taste or the scent. A little light coconut flavor may be OK-but I'd prefer it without. Scents-I pass on. Until now. I got a free coconut shimmer body butter from The Body Shop. I was debating giving it away as a gift, but I tried a sample at the store...and it's not bad. It reminds me of summer. Then I got a free set of Coconut Passionfruit items-body spray, lotion, and body wash-from Bath & Body Works. I like it! Then I tried a Coconut Lime Breeze lotion. I really liked that one...although I really smelled the limes and not any coconut. Are my tastes changing? Or are these just great versions of the scent? I still wouldn't pick coconut as a top choice, but I won't be so quick to dismiss it now.

Sadly, Napoleon crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. He was always a happy boy...almost too happy. It took me too long to discover her had malocclusion. He was still eating and taking treats from my had. The poor boy had even developed an abscess in his mouth. He got his teeth trimmed and some medicine and seemed to be fine. His latest trick was to jump out of his cage to start exploring as I was giving everyone their supper. When I got home from work yesterday, I found his body. I'm not sure what happened, but he was a sweet boy who will be missed.

I went to the grocery store after work the other day. I enjoy going at that time (around midnight) as not too many people are around. The only problem is that the deli counter is closed along with the food bars and such. Still, it's a nice time to go to pick up a few things and browse in peace. I wanted to get a few things to take to work for lunches this week. I looked at the prepackaged food they have. Now it's normally a bit pricey-but oh so convenient, and tasty. I could pick up a pack of chicken tenders (already breaded and cooked) for $6. But when I looked-the price was now $7! I put the package down and looked again. All the items that were normally $6 were now $7! I'll pass on that. Then I went to get some milk. I usually just buy a quart and it costs around 78 cents. Nope-a quart of milk is now $1.03! What the heck?!? All around I saw huge price jumps on many things. I mentioned it to the cashier and she said she saw it too. I mentioned it to co-workers who noticed the same thing. What happened recently to cause this big jump? Or are the stores finally giving in to the high price of gas and other costs. Whatever the reason, it stinks and I'm going to have to be much more careful when I shop for groceries!

Stealth

There are some benefits to having a dog that's pretty much deaf and sleeps hard. I woke up this morning before my alarm, needing to use the bathroom. I had about an hour left to sleep. It's one thing if you wake in the middle of the night having to go-you get up and it doesn't matter who you wake up-they know it's the middle of the night and go back to sleep. However, being so close to wake up time-if the dog wakes up now-it's good odds he'll get up and want to go outside. Here's where the stealth comes in. I got out of bed. Sam was sound asleep in the hall, next to the bathroom. I tiptoed by him, used the bathroom, then walked back over him to get back to bed. He never moved. Yes, one more hour of sleep!

Last Day

Today is the last day of my vacation. I'm trying to savor every last moment and NOT think about work. I had a relaxing break of a vacation. I drove to Dunkirk, NY for America's Grape Country Wine Festival, went to the Brockport Art Festival, a German Festival, a tour of the Darwin Martin House in Buffalo, and Wedgestock. I took long walks with Sam and worked with Harley. I also spent time with the cats and rats. I watched the second season of True Blood. I did some basic work around the house-but not some of the in depth stuff I wanted to do. I also didn't do any of the crafts I wanted to do. One week is simply not enough, especially since the administration is blocking our time off. Who knows when I'll have a break other than my regular weekends? I've had dinner and am sipping wine in comfy clothes. I decided not to attend my 25th high school reunion-which is going on right now. I'm happy with that decision-sorry guys. I'll be working on a photo contest for a RAT group and just chilling this evening. If only my vacation could go on forever...while still being paid my current salary, of course!
