Exclusive

What is it about the words "exclusive", "only available here", "limited edition" and so on, that make an object suddenly that much more desirable? Is it only collectors and pack rats who feel that way, or is everybody more tempted to buy something when it's described in that manner? Why is it? Does buying that unique item somehow make us feel more special, privileged that we have the item, when obviously everyone can't have it? I don't know the answer, but those words certainly make me take notice, even if I don't wind up buying it!

I worked for the Franklin Mint for a year. (One of those places that makes collectible plates and dolls and other overpriced stuff) I am now completely immune to the words "Limited Edition" and all of their relatives. This is a side effect of having to explain to a thousand people that limited edition just means that at SOME POINT they'll stop making them. That point may be one billion items produced, but it will eventually come.
